Advent Calendar

by , posted on November 29th, 2011 in Features

There are some amazing advent calendar tutorials and round ups out there. If you missed them, you can find my favorites here, here and here. Since those post have already been done, and done rather well I might add, I’ll avoid tutorials and round ups. Instead, I’ll offer a short post on what we’re doing this year and lessons learned from last December.

This year, I wanted to try something different for our advent calendar. So I drew simple little wreaths and through the magic of glue and glitter added some sparkle. Glue + glitter = match made in heaven. Sigh…

I must admit, I rather love how the bags turned out this year. No two are exactly the same. Sparkly and unique. Not such a terrible combination, yeah? Got to hand it to Martha, she sure knows how to make a pretty glitter.

You may remember last time around, we focused strictly on things we’d do together as a family. But, I’m going to be completely honest, 24 days of planning activities was exhausting. There was too much pressure and the stamina one needs to do it? I’m just going to come right out and say it, I ain’t got it in me this year.

Instead, I’m taking a cue from Sally Shim and doing a mix of activities along with little trinkets. So far, I have chap stick, erasers, peppermints and stickers. Nothing huge, just a little something.

As far as activities? Rest assured there is a note to make chalkboard Santas again. ‘Twas a highlight last year—simple, memorable and a ridiculous amount of fun.

They turned out so good I love them! I think we’re doing a mix of activities/books to read/and little things. I reserve the right to change the order too ;)

Thank youuuu! Good point about reserving the right to change the order. The bags might be good for that. When they’re not looking I can make “adjustments.”

I should write down some books to read on a few of the activity slips. Fantastic idea to incorporate them!

I love the simplicity of your bags! I was going to try and be all fancy with burlap bags, tied to the mantel or something, but now that I see these, I think I’ll take a cue from you & do up some simple paper bags too. Off to get stuff to fill them with tomorrow! Like you, I don’t have it in me to come up with creative ideas and activities! Thanks for the inspiration!

Of course! So happy you got something out of it! I bet you could even run them through the printer or stamp them too.
