-or- What Can You Make With a Paper Bag? Part 1

by , posted on July 21st, 2011 in Creativity, Ideas and Inspiration

The heat index today is supposed to hit something like 10,000 degrees. So, to break up the squabbling that comes with being cooped up together, I thought I’d give the kids a challenge. I handed them each a paper bag, some crayons, scissors and tape and said, make whatever you want.

Trader Joe's is getting a bunch of free advertising on the blog today.

One of the kids immediately decided to make A PAPER AIRPLANE!

First step: remove the handles

Next, cut the paper bag into flat surface. This may seem like a simple thing but kids are actually working on a bunch of stuff while they do it: fine motor, planning and problem solving. After all, how do you make a 3D object 2D?

Once you’ve trimmed the bag and have a flat rectangular piece of paper, fold it into an airplane shape. I helped a bit with this step.

Time to fly.

After playing for a bit, he spontaneously said, “hey, if you flip this over, it could also be a boat.” I like that thinking.

I’ll be back later to show you what the other kid made. Stay tuned…

This is awesome! I want to leave work to go home and work on my Trader Joe’s bag project. Hopefully someone from the store will see this and give us a lifetime supply of their tomato sauce.

    Great idea!

Love this idea! I’m going to challenge a few boys over here who are also cooped up Bc it’s 10,000 degrees out!

Love Dave’s comment too. Makes me want to take the challenge. It’s like project runway meets kids with brown bag!

    Awesome

Ugh, this whole country heatwave thing has got to go. Seriously.

And yes, that’s exactly what this challenge is like isn’t it?! Hey, is that back on yet?
