Filmmaker Pamela Tanner Boll believes three things. First, in order to live well you have to know yourself. Second, once you know yourself you can create an authentic community. And finally, to build an authentic community you have take care of the earth it’s built on.
If you’re a fan of documentaries, you may recognize Boll’s name. She was a producer on Born Into Brothels and made her feature length directorial debut with Who Does She Think She Is? It’s clear she’s a filmmaker who doesn’t shy away from big questions. (more…)

Last night, Dave and I watched a documentary about Laura Dekker, a 14 year old who sailed around the world BY HERSELF. While that’s wildly impressive, what really got me was that she took two years to do it. Dekker said she wanted to experience the cultures of the different countries she’d visit during her voyage. Last week I finally dived into the tween series and talked about how R rated movies probably aren’t the best idea for our kids, while never mentioning two important things: 1. great movies for tweens to watch and 2. how much fun it is to watch movies with my kids now. You know I’m kind of a movie dork right? I’m going to lump Dave in with me on this one. He’s an even bigger movie dork. Now he makes a living making films. Which, honestly? Still pretty much blows my mind. Photographer and filmmaker. These were NOT titles he held when I met him. He worked at the big red K, little blue m-a-r-t when I met him. Meanwhile, I was a dishwasher in a crappy restaurant. Man, we’ve been together a long time.
I love movies. When I’m feeling in a creative lull or just blue, I’ll fire up netflix and see what looks good. I scroll through my ‘suggestion’ lists to see what strikes my fancy. There are boatloads of titles that fall into one of two categories—the two I watch most often: classics and documentaries.
It’s true. I’m not only a movie dork, I’m a documentary movie dork. Wait, what’s that noise? I hear snoring. Did I just bore you to sleep? (more…)
