Did you ever dream of joining the circus when you grew up? The costumes alone seemed worth it to me. Such vivid colors! Such pageantry! Such excitement! And don’t even get me started on the performance art of it all. *Swoon* More than 60 years after its heyday, the circus continues to inspire. Now, that’s pretty incredible.
Today, I stumbled across these circus figures made out of cork, bits of wire and scraps of fabric and got inspired. So this rainy afternoon, the kids and I broke out the glue gun, foraged around the house for bits and bobs and made some circus toys of our own. Oooh, that strong man is strong. That’s 2,000 pounds he’s lifting!

Brain Pickings has a great post up about the circus with beautiful photos and illustrations from the book, The Circus Book: 1870-1950. Check it out. It’s wonderful inspiration (and some darn smart commentary too).
Note: If you don’t drink wine or save corks, try calling a local wine shop, wine bar or restaurant. They may have some on hand for you. You can also order them online.

Thanks Allison! It was an off the cuff kind of activity and we had a ton of fun with it.
