Cooking with Robot: Microwave Popcorn
by Jennifer Cooper, posted on September 10th, 2010 in Cooking
In the last post, I shared that I recently discovered I can make my own microwave popcorn using a few ingredients and a brown paper lunch bag. There was a link to Alton Brown’s recipe in the picture. But in case you missed it, I called in our Robot to show us how it’s done.

And now the truly important question: Popcorn toppings? Discuss…

Garrett, I’ve done it several times without incident. But that first time I wondered if it would be safe. So I did a little ‘research’ (i.e. surf the internet asking it why the staple wouldn’t spark)….
Here’s what I found:
1. The staple isn’t properly shaped to produce an ark (whereas, let’s say, a fork is) and it is the arc from metal to the interior of the microwave (which is also metal) that causes problems
2. There isn’t enough metal in the staple to produce enough heat to cause any problems -and/or-
3. The staple is shorter than the wavelength of the microwaves
-BUT-
If it still makes you nervous (and why wouldn’t it? we’ve been told for years to never put any metal in a microwave) you can simply fold the bag over several times or use an accordion fold so the popcorn doesn’t pop out of the bag.
Hope that helps. And thanks for asking!
