For the Love of Books: Marbled Paper Bookmarks
These beautiful bookmarks would make a wonderful gift anytime of year, but with a pretty pink and red palette and a blank side (perfect for writing a little love note) these marbled bookmarks are just right for Valentine’s Day. Kids will love creating the paper and I think these make the perfect teacher gift. Warning: once you learn this simple technique for marbling paper, you are going to want to marble everything!
Acrylic paint in a few colors (we used red, pink, silver, and gold)
Something to scrape off the shaving cream (a bench scraper works great)
Scissors or paper cutter
Protect your work surface (this is a messy project). Fill a cookie sheet or shallow box with a layer of shaving cream.
Squirt lines of paint on top of the shaving cream.
Use a skewer or toothpick to swirl the paint together. First drag horizontal lines across the shaving cream then swirl the paint a bit more every which way.
Gently press a piece of paper on to the shaving cream. Peel it off and set it on your covered work surface or another cookie sheet. Scrape the shaving cream off of the paper. Allow the paper to dry. Repeat this process until the paint all blends together. (We got about 5 sheets out of it).
Cut the paper into 1 ½” wide strips. You might want to trim a little off of the top and bottom edges as well. We got 6 bookmarks from one 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper.
Optional: Punch a hole in the top and pull an 8″ length of ribbon half way through. Hold both sides of the ribbon together and tie a simple knot.
Optional: Write a sweet valentine message on the back of your bookmark. I’m partial to a good pun, “You’re tops in my book!”
Happy Crafting, and if you become addicted to marbling, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
