Geode Smashing | Camp Classic Play!

by , posted on July 16th, 2012 in Science Fun

Geodes are a rather entertaining little rock. The outside looks like a plain old rock, nothing special. But crack one open and its secret is revealed—inside it’s full of glimmering crystals that shimmer in the sun.

Want to give it a try? You’ll need a bunch of geodes (we picked ours up at a local toy shop but you can find them online), a hammer and a sack or sock. Place a geode in the sack, deliver a good thwack and see what you get.

If thwacking it isn’t enough, or you have a future geologist on your hands, encourage your kids to draw pictures of the geodes and research how they’re formed. For us, it was more of an exercise in fun and metaphor—you can’t always tell what’s on the inside by looking at the outside.

What a great idea! We have a fossil hammer and a great interest in the insides of rocks so put both together and it could make for an entertaining afternoon. Thank you.

The girl is all about crystals. She and her grade 1 friends were talking crystals, taking books out of the library on crystals, and sharing crystals all through the school year.

I’ll be doing this for sure!

This is what our last three weekend hikes were partially about, fossil & geode hunting. There is a place near southeastern Ohio that is especially known for fossils & geodes, where they are found naturally. It was pretty thrilling to find these in real life. I bet there are similar places in MD.

    cool peeps think alike ;)
