Give A Kid A Camera

We gave out disposable cameras at the photography party last weekend. We made sure our youngest got one since his sister got her own camera as a birthday gift.
The other morning, armed with camera in hand, our guy set off to document the world through his eyes. He was so excited. He really got into it, turning the camera this way and that, snapping and winding the film reel.
When I told him I’d drop off the film to get developed, he grinned from ear to ear and said, “Don’t worry. I took really great photos. There’s one I took of the sunshine this morning.” Naturally, I beamed with pride.
I dropped the camera off at Target and picked up the photos the next day. I couldn’t wait to look through them. Yes, there was one of sunshine. It was lovely. It was right before the picture of the toilet.
I told my friends about this experiment (and of course the picture of the toilet). “Isn’t that how Robert Mapplethorpe got his start? You find beauty where you find it. Let your guy find it where he sees it.”
I wasn’t going to include the toilet shot in this post, but I realized my friend was right.
Who am I to censor an artist?

You have no idea how grateful I am for that too.
