Giveaway | Meet Maker Mama
Ooh! We’re in for a treat today. The lovely Amy from Maker Mama is here to chat blogging, making and going green. Be sure to stick around because there’s an adorable giveaway at the end of this post!
Tell me about Maker Mama. What do you blog about?
I started my blog as a hobby, like many craft bloggers out there–it even had a different name at the beginning. As I kept with it, it grew into to a place where I not only share the things I love making, but also a place to encourage others to make, too. There was a point where it became less about me (I hope), and more about the audience–I started making more tutorials and thinking more about what readers wanted to experience. Maker Mama is my little corner online to share how creating makes life more meaningful–and I have a big heart for doing that in the most earth-conscious ways I can. My favorite craft supply store is the thrift store!
How did the shop start?
I originally opened up shop on Etsy but didn’t have any one thing on there that I was known for making. I have a couple of patterns on there now, but I brought the handmade shop to the blog for the first time recently after learning how easy it actually was. It doesn’t have quite the same exposure, but I like being able to share it directly with my readers. Right now, I have my sock kitties in the shop—they’re all hand sewn and yes, I use secondhand socks to make them (they’re often better quality and I give them a good washing of course). I’ve been making the kitties for several years now, mostly as birthday gifts for friends’ kids My girls love theirs too.
What do you want people to take away from your blog?
I hope to inspire visitors to get creative themselves—to get back to being makers instead of buying absolutely everything. And being creative doesn’t have to mean making a giant quilt, it can be small too. Even learning to mend your kids’ holey jeans instead of tossing them out is a way to create. People have more power in their own two hands than they think.
Anything else you’d like to add?
As a green-living-lover with a big family myself (there are six of us), it can be hard to be all green all the time, especially when it comes to supporting handmade work. Whether it’s buying locally grown food, using eco-friendly products or buying from and supporting handmade artists, it can be hard entrusting your money to things you may not see an immediate payoff. I’m always trying to convince my husband to go a little greener at our house. It started way back when we switched to cloth napkins. Now as a family joke my husband gets a roll of paper towels every Christmas and boy does he make it last!
The payoff for supporting sustainable goods is so much greater than we can imagine—it provides a better life for everyone involved. I’d love to encourage everyone to think about how the things they buy really do affect what our world looks like. Go find some fun cloth napkins at the thrift store, start an herb garden, and when you do buy new and/or handmade, make it something that will last!
And now for the drum roll….
We’re giving away a Red Mini Skirt Kitty from Amy’s shop. Isn’t it cute! I want one!
