Movie Night

by , posted on February 3rd, 2010 in Ideas and Inspiration

The curtains open and the movie begins.

In the Love Issue we visited a family as they enjoyed a simple night in—pizza and a movie. This is something we do often in the Cooper house. Last year, my daughter had a mock pj party (she was a bit too young for a real sleep over). She invited a friend over to make their own pizzas, mix up some yummy rootbeer floats and watch Herbie the Love Bug. I must say, they seemed to have a lot of fun.

As a child, I so fondly remember watching the Wonderful World of Disney movies on Sunday nights: Pollyanna, the Swiss Family Robinson, the Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again. My dad would make pizza dough (I seem to recall his version came from a bagged mix that only required the addition of water) and we would settle in for a couple hours together. It was one of the few quiet moments we had as a family. In a rowdy family of six, quiet moments were sometimes hard to find.

But before I get completely swept up in nostalgia, I want to get to the real point of this post and that is to ask: what are your favorite family movies?

Our current family fave is Annie :) My kiddos are constantly singing the soundtrack and meanwhile, my 4-yr old spunky daughter refers to me as Ms. Hanigan when I refuse to let her play until her room is clean!

Our family favorite is My Neighbor Totoro, which is just the most charming Japanese animated movie. Also, Kiki’s Delivery Service – really, any movie by Hayao Miyazaki is wonderful. Highly recommended if you’re not already familiar with them.

Molly I haven’t seen either of them! I’m adding them to my list.

Tina, that was one of my absolute FAVORITE movies when I was little. I still belt out Tomorrow from time to time.

My kids are currently watching Up. We also love Ratatouille and Madagascar. We are not very original. ;)

Annie & Sound of Music are favorites in this house. The Adam Sandler movie “Bedtime Stories” was actually a HUGE hit here – lots of silliness, no Sandler potty jokes.

I am with Tina and Kirsten. Annie and Sound of Music are on a loop in our house (for my 4 y.o. daughter). Occasionally my 7 y.o. son will complain that he doesn’t want to watch (“That’s a girly movie!”) but then I will catch him laughing or singing the songs or even asking “Isn’t this the part when…”. :-)

Last year my kids were R-E-A-L-L-Y into the Sound of Music. In fact, I remember taking a walk and the kids burst out in Doe A Deer, and I thought, are we on camera or something?

I second My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Also, Castle in the Sky. We love Hayao Miyazaki!

We love, love, love Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; ever since the boy was 2 and my husband came home with it. Hard to believe that was 7 years ago…
