Saving Up + Slap Watches

by , posted on February 21st, 2012 in Parenting

The kids have been eyeing a pair of slap watches for a while now. We told them they’d have to use their allowances. This past Saturday, after three weeks of saving, they bought this and this.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t big on the whole allowance thing. I figure chores are just a part of family life—no one pays you to do them. But, it’s been a great way to teach kids about the power of delayed gratification. As one of my college professors liked to say, our ability to delay gratification is “what separates us from the apes.” Well, that and opposable thumbs.

Oh thanks for the links! My little one has been wanting one but I hadn’t seen one that I (uh I mean he) thought was good looking.

You’re welcome! It was a struggle for us too. I think what sold him on it was that it looked a LOT like daddy’s. And it was only $16 so, not too terribly bad.

Wish I could do the allowance thing at home. Nothing fazes my kid. “You want that? You gotta finish making your bed, tidying your playroom etc”. Her response? Then forget it, I don’t want it. lol. And when I least expect it, whammo. She tidies up. Next time, just head to chinatown and get the slap watches! 2 for 10 bucks. Side walk sale in chinatown can be awesome. ;p
