Super Cool Heart Shirt

It's made with love

Tease me if you must, but I’m going to come right out and say it—I’m a sucker for hearts and Valentine’s Day. I’m also a sucker for making things. In an effort to combine my loves, and because I was inspired by Ali Henrie’s awesome tutorial + Liz’s freezer paper love, today I made my own V-day shirt.

It took me about 40 minutes from start to finish. Thirty of those minutes was spent watching paint dry. Ooh! Exciting!

For this project you'll need: a shirt, freezer paper, scissors, fabric paint, a small foam brush and an iron

Step 1: Cut a heart out of the freezer paper. Lay paper (waxy side down) on shirt and press with an iron. It'll stick to the shirt.

Apply textile paint using a foam brush. I found a dabbing technique worked better than a brushing one.

Step 4. Allow paint to dry for 30 minutes or according to manufacturer's instructions. Peel away paper. Turn the shirt inside out, iron it (to set the paint) and...

You got yourself a heart shirt

Very nice. Is freezer paper the same as parchment paper or wax paper? Living in rural Italy makes it hard to get my hands on “supplies”. Love the striped shirt you put the heart on!

Jillian I think it is the same paper a butcher would use to wrap meat in – you might want to check there to see if you can get it!

Suuuuuuper cool craft Jen! Can’t believe I saw you wearing it & didn’t catch that it was your crafty self who made it!

Jillian, it’s a bit different. It has a waxy side and a plain paper side. In the UK, they call it grease proof paper.

I’m not sure where you’d find it in Italy. Perhaps a butcher?

Here’s a link I found that has more info: http://www.makeit-loveit.com/2011/01/what-is-freezer-paper.html

If you can’t find any, let me know and I’ll mail you a couple pieces to try. It’ll be like a penpal thing except with freezer paper. Ha!

Oh thanks you guys. I’ll go ask my butcher tomorrow to give me a sheet of his meat paper. He already thinks of me as the weird foreigner that cooks strange un-Italian things so this will just really make him scratch his head. If it doesn’t work out I’ll take you up on that penpal offer!
