Holiday Entertaining
Tuesday, December 7th, 2010
Hosting a get-together with friends or family this holiday season? Julee Dyer from Warm Hot Chocolate is here today with a fantastic activity for all those kids on your guest list.
You may remember Julee from the amazing Rock and Roll party she threw her son. Julee is clever, creative and genuine. You can find a wonderful assortment of crafts for kids, recipes and musings on family life—all lovingly photographed—on her site.
Whether planning a children’s party or an adult party with children attending, I like to include a craft table for the kids. It’s my secret wish that the kids will sit quietly at the table instead of transferring every toy in our playroom into the living room. While that never happens, I do find that the kids really enjoy a special activity just for them.

Mail Bag
Tuesday, November 30th, 2010
Readers! We’ve received our first question! I’m not afraid to admit, I’m a little giddy.
Hey Jen,
My son will be three in January (midst of winter), so I have to plan an indoor party. Planning his last two parties was easy, but now my son’s so much more active and can appreciate all that a party will entail. The past two years, we had a storytime session (my mother-in-law is a former librarian). I plan on having storytime again, but do you or your readers have any good ideas for indoor activities or themes? He’s into anything trucks, firetrucks, etc. He loves music (even what’s on the radio currently). He loves crafty projects as well (i.e., painting, foam stickers, etc.). Any help/ideas you can pass on to me, would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Stuck Indoors
Ooh, good question Stuck Indoors. Planning a three-year-old’s birthday party can be a bit of a challenge for sure. So, I’ve called in a friend to help you out! (more…)

Wigwams and Puppets
Wednesday, November 24th, 2010
The other day, Willow asked if we had pictures of how we incorporated our children and our friends’ children into a party. Great request Willow!
Last weekend we celebrated a pre-Thanksgiving with friends and I was tasked with creating a few activities for the kids. I came up with a two activities: one was a team exercise where we asked the kids to build and decorate a wigwam, and the other was a less structured activity where kids were given blanks to draw on to make their own puppets. Here’s how it turned out…

A Look Inside the Science Issue
Wednesday, November 10th, 2010
Haven’t had a chance to click through the Science Issue yet? Here’s a peek at what’s inside: Molly de Aguair stops by with a brilliantly clever butterfly themed craft.
Special thanks to ohdeedoh for featuring Molly’s work on their blog. Their take? It’d make a terrific favor for a butterfly, bug or science party. What a great idea!

- Kids cast their fishing line behind a sheet and a stuffed animal was hooked on their line
- Cupcakes
- Impromptu puppet show with prizes won from fishing game
The Challenge
Host a Carnival Themed party for 20 kids and their families. Finding a suitable location that fit our budget and dealing with weather (wind) were the largest challenges to overcome. (more…)

Carnival Party: Fortune Teller
Friday, October 15th, 2010
Update:
Wow! So many of you learn about Classic Play through a search for “fortune teller sayings for kids”. Which, leads me to believe y’all are having the same trouble I did when I first asked this question. If you are, here are a few fortunes we came up with that might help get you started (just scroll to the bottom). Also check out some of the links Cindy mentions in the comments section.
