The Reading Nook | Interrupting Chicken

by , posted on November 20th, 2012 in The Reading Nook

A story about reading bedtime stories? Yup – and it IS hilarious. Interrupting Chicken has my six year old daughter in stitches every time we read it. Me too.

Papa Chicken is desperate to finish reading a bedtime story to his daughter, little red chicken. He tries Little Red Riding Hood. He tries Chicken Little. He tries Hansel and Gretel. There’s only one problem – a BIG problem. Every time Papa gets to the climax of a story, little red chicken frets about the characters so much that she cannot help but interrupt. And change the ending.

You will adore the illustrations. Author David Ezra Stein uses watercolor, water-soluble crayon, china marker, pen and opaque white ink to perfectly capture the setting of a bedroom at night. It contrasts beautifully with the plain and simple storybooks that Papa reads to little red chicken. It is no surprise that this book was a Caldecott Honor Book for 2011.

And the text is tailor-made for using funny voices for Papa and the little red chicken. I dare you and your kids to make it through without being interrupted by laughter.

Oh man. I have a few “interrupting chickens” in my house too. And I have to admit that their endings are usually better than the original one. Gotta love creative kids!

I can’t wait to check this book out. I’m living with a very intense interrupting “chicken” who would no doubt love it!
