The Reading Nook | Mercy Watson to the Rescue

Do you have a little who is not so little anymore? One who is learning to read and ready for chapter books? Here’s one that is a ton of fun, both to look at and to read. There are enough illustrations to keep them engaged balanced with enough text for chapters. Think of it as the perfect transition book for your beginning readers. It’s Mercy Watson to the Rescue.
Mr. and Mrs. Watson live at 54 Deckawoo Drive with a most delightful and charming pet – a pig called Mercy. The Watsons adore Mercy – she is a porcine wonder who is obsessed with hot, buttered toast. The higher the stack, the better. However, their cranky neighbor Eugenia Lincoln of 52 Deckawoo Drive is a lot less enamored of Mercy. I’m not giving too much away when I tell you that Mercy and Eugenia are destined to butt heads.
I just adore the painted comic illustrations by Chris Van Dusen. He’s captured author Kate DiCamillo’s characters perfectly. For those of you with kids who love to draw, Van Dusen got his start when his mom would give him and his four brothers pencils and paper to keep them busy.
So does Mercy Watson really come to the rescue? Read it and find out.
