Very Hungry Caterpillar Finger Puppets
One of the very first board books I ever bought my kids was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. I can’t think of a sweeter book that illustrates growing up so beautifully. It’s especially relevant now as growth spurts abound at the Cooper house. My kids are constantly hungry. I fear the teen years!
So when the fine people at Penguin Kids asked if I’d like to create something fun for the 45th Anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I said, I’m in! To celebrate, I turned to another childhood classic: finger puppets. I love how these little caterpillar puppets turned out. Wouldn’t they be great at a Very Hungry Caterpillar themed birthday party?
They’re super easy to make. Here’s how…
A sheet of construction paper or card stock in the following colors: green, red, yellow, black
A circular paper punch*
For each caterpillar, punch four large circles out of your green paper and one out of the red.
Take a piece of black paper and cut out two antenna.
Cut out two yellow ovals for eyes.
Cut out two smaller green ovals for pupils.
Cut out a small strip of red paper to form a ring. Mine measured about 2 1/2 inches long by 1/2 inch wide. Make sure it’s large enough to fit your child’s first two fingers through. Glue ring closed.
Glue all of the pieces together to form a caterpillar. Glue ring to the back of the caterpillar’s head. Optional: attach small black triangles for feet.
The caterpillar is ready to play! Kids can act out scenes from the book, or, take their new friend out on a walk around the neighborhood to see the world. I’m sure he’d enjoy made up adventures at home too. He’s an easy going guy.
